Hero's Eyes

Chp. 1

The small Millington Street is filled with excitement, as four year old Amy is grabbed by a large black man.

Amy screams, “Mommy, help me!”

Her mother stands in horror, as the man teases her daughter, making her cry. “Let her go, George”

George loosens his grip on the child. “The little brat deserves it.”

Her eyes fill with tears, “You can’t blame that child for what happened to your son, Joey. She’s not the racist! Now, let her go!”

George drags Amy by the arm, as her mother attempts to get him off her. “It’s your turn to suffer!”

He pushes the mother to the ground, in angry fit.

The mother cries out, “Somebody help us!”

Twenty- three year old Justin Timberlake attempts to duck, as a metal object comes toward his head, after he rushes from the nearby sidewalk to try to assist the youngster and her mom. He manages to get her out of George’s hold. He screams painfully, as the man hits him with the metal object. He falls to his knees.

He gazes comfortingly into the little ones eyes, “Go back to Mommy, Sweetie. The man won’t hurt you anymore.”

The large African American man stands over Justin, ready to attack, again. “You stay out of this beef, White Boy.”

Justin trembles at the man’s words, as the child runs into her mother’s arms.

The black individual threatens him more. “One more anything out of you, and I’ll do something very drastic.”

He walks away, leaving Justin all by himself in pain.

The mother rushes in to get him help, and offers to go to the hospital, with him.

Justin insists he’s fine, but the paramedics think it’ll be better for him to get checked out. They’re concerned because he can’t recall what just happened.

He sits at the hospital uncomfortably, as his head ached, and bleeds some. He covers the wound with several tissues, until he can get something better. “How’d I get this bump?”

Amy’s mother sighs, “You saved my little girl’s life. Thank you.”

Justin nods his head, “Yeah, glad I could be of help.” He wishes he could remember what he did, but it’s all a blur. He doesn’t even recall coming to the hospital, and that just happened. “I have to get to the studio.”

She half smiles, “Studio?”

“I’m a recording artist. My name’s Justin.”

“It’s nice to meet you, Justin. I’m sorry we had to meet under these circumstances. Thank you for stepping in when you did, you saved both our lives.”

“No problem, Ma’am.”

The ER staff has Justin lay down, so they can do some testing. After a couple hours of testing they come to the conclusion that it doesn’t need much attention, aside from a few drugs to reduce the swelling.

Justin pops the pills in his mouth, and lays his head back on the pillow. He’s not feeling up to driving, but needs to get to the studio. Walking is out of the question he tells himself, as he falls drowsy from the drugs.

Amy’s mom offers to take him to the studio. He thanks her graciously. She assists him to the car.

Amy smiles at Justin, who lays in the backseat. “He’s *NSYNC, Mommy.”

She sighs, “What are you talking about, Darling?”

The child begins singing one of the band’s most popular songs. “He’s *NSYNC.”

She laughs, “He’s not very in sync right now.”

Justin moans from the back.

She helps him inside of the studio, where he rests.

J.C. awakes him, “Justin you got to get up. This isn’t like you!”

Justin stares at him in a daze, “Wha…..”

“You have to record your vocals. Are you ok?”

Justin smiles tiredly, “I’m alright. I just haven’t gotten much sleep lately.”

Chp. 2

The next day tears trickle from David Timberlake’s tender baby blue eyes. “I miss Daddy!”

Abby, his mom wipes the tears, from his peach soft face. She welcomes him in her arms, kissing him gently on the cheek. “It’ll be alright. Daddy will be home shortly.”

The curly haired boy studies his mother’s face, questioning if she’s being truthful. ”Mommy, you said that yesterday.”

She adjusts her hair piece nervously. “Daddy, will come. I promise, David.”

David pulls out a chair, and sits down impatiently awaiting for his father. He sings quietly to himself, to calm his nerves.

There’s a knock at the door. Abbey goes to see who it is.

Before she gets a word out David yells, “Daddy!”

The tall muscular father, with golden brown curls, and soft sapphire eyes embraces his weary wife. “I’ve missed you.”

Abbey complains, “Why didn’t you come home yesterday?”

“I couldn’t get away from my work. I called, didn’t you get the message?”

She sighs, stomping her foot. “All I ever get is a call. I’d like a little more, Justin.”

David rushes to his father’s aide. “Daddy tries Mommy!”

Justin takes his son in his arms, snuggling him. “What have you been up too, David?”

The youngster whispers in his father’s ear, “Playing music!” He kisses his father.

“I need to talk to Mommy, Buddy.”

David nods his head, “Okay Daddy.”

“I’ll be right back, David.”

“It is work, or me and your son, Justin. Which do you chose?”

Tears fill his eyes, “If I have to make a choice, its family. I love music, but family will always be first priority.”

She examines his head, as she takes off his knitted baby blue hat, “What’s this bump?”
Justin sighs, “Ouch, that’s real sore! Please don’t touch me there.”

“That’s quite the bump, Justin. How’d you get it?”

He gives her a strange expression, not sure what to say, because he doesn’t remember. “I really love your hair tonight.”

She raises her voice, “Justin Randal Timberlake, don’t go changing the subject!”

“I’m sorry. I can’t recall what happened.”

“How can you not remember?”

“I don’t. I went to the office yesterday, and that was all.”

“You’re saying you picked up an injury like that in the studio?”

He gives her a blank look. “I explained all I could.”

“Who else was at the studio?”

“J.C. was there.”

Abbey calls up J.C. to see if he knows why Justin has the bump on his head. J.C. can’t give her any leads, as to what happened. He didn’t even notice it, because of the hat Justin was wearing. He notes that Justin wasn’t himself. He was in a daze, but blamed it on being over worked.

The morning news paper explains it all. She shows Justin the paper, “So, this is what happened. You saved that little girl’s life.”

“What are you talking about? I wasn’t involved in that!”

“You’re a hero, and you don’t even know it.”

“No, I’m just a guy, that likes to help people, but I have no memory of this precious little girl.”

“Sweetheart, I’m surprised you have no recollection of going to the hospital. How’d you get home?”

Justin sarcastically answers, “I have a car, Abbey, and know how to drive.” He pauses for a moment. “I don’t want to talk about this, okay?”

Abbey drops the conversation, seeing that it’s hurting him to talk about the incident. She wonders if he blanked out because of the pain, after he was sure the child was safe. She’s concerned about the bump, but doesn’t desire to bring up what happened.

Justin goes to their bed room, still in his pajamas, to get ready for the day. He begins to undress to take a shower. He glances at his arm. ”What’s this?” An ID bracelet from the Memphis Hospital is on his right wrist. Justin cuts it off. He’s surprised nobody’s mentioned it to him. “What’s going on, with me?” His knees are red, from falling on them, and slightly tender. Justin washes carefully, trying not to hit the extremely sore spot on his head.

Chp. 3

David enters the kitchen, “Where’s Daddy?”

“He’s in the bedroom!”

The youngster rushes into the room, giving his father a big hug. “Can we play basketball?”

“Sure, we can. Have you been practicing?”

David shows his father his skills he’s learned. The kid hardly misses a shot, despite his height deprivation, and tender age. He guards just as well. His lay ups are impressive. David’s a natural, like his father.

“Daddy, don’t split with Mommy!”

Justin sighs, “Mommy and I are trying to work things out. I’m not going anywhere. I’m all yours!”

“Mommy says no. Mommy says you don’t keep your word. Why would you want to keep words, Daddy?”

Justin laughs a little. “It’s an expression. Mommy’s saying I lie. This isn’t all true. I don’t mean to hurt Mommy and you. Work messes a lot of stuff up. Music is cool, but you come first. We’ll play in my studio someday”

He pouts, “Daddy, you said that before.”

“I know I did. Daddy hasn’t had time, and I’m sorry, David. I promise it’s going to change. I’m giving up my job, so I can be with you.”

“Daddy, I love you!”

Justin nods, “I love you, too! What do you want to do now?”

The boy exclaims, “Let’s play video games!”

Justin follows his son inside, and plops down beside him. He peers at his watch, amazed at how much time has gone by. It’s now afternoon. His head is hurting, but he feels he owes his son this time, sick or not. “What are we playing?”

David grins, “Lego Racer is my best game!”

Justin smiles, “This is pretty cool. The things they come up with these days. What’s the racer’s name?”

“I have Lucky. Stanley is yours!”

Justin laughs, “My driver’s a cute dog!”

“Mommy says you like puppy dogs.”

Justin winks at him, “I do.”

“Why don’t we have a puppy? Daddy, can we get one?”

“Sorry David, We talked about this before, Mommy’s allergic to dogs, so we can’t have one.”

“Can I get a baby sister or brother?”

“It may happen, but I can’t make that promise.”

David asks, “How come you have an ouchie?”

“I bumped my head. It’ll feel better, soon. I’m going to go rest. I’ll see you at supper time.” He kisses him on the forehead, before heading to his bedroom.

He yells from the hallway, “Daddy, it is noon.”

Justin turns back in his direction, scratching his head, “Sorry. Daddy can’t think well.”

“Daddy, can I rest with you?”
Justin nods his head, “Sure.” He puts David up on the large plush bed. He lies down, and David lays his head on his father’s chest. Tears fill Justin’s eyes, as he holds David in his arms, something he seldom is able to do, not for this long.

Abbey quietly makes her entrance into their bed room to get a number for a neighbor, who’s talking to Abbey on the phone. She moves David off of his father, and checks on her husband, because he never takes naps during the day.

Chp. 4

Justin’s in a daze, as he comes too. He tells Abbey, “I’ll be fine.”

She tells him, “I think that injury needs to be examined, again. You’re not acting right.”
David’s mom awakes him. “We’re going to take Daddy to the doctor.”

The emergency room staff instantly remembers Justin, though he has no memory of them. They give Justin pills to reduce the swelling, and ice his head.

The doctor on call suggests, “It might be best to admit him, until this swelling goes down. The swelling is making him drowsy, and impacting his short term memory. He’ll be safer in the hospital, where we can watch him closely.”

Abbey sighs, “There’s no way he’ll stay.”

“His pills will make him sleepy, which will add to the other drowsiness.”

Abbey moans, “Justin lay back down. You should be resting.”

He stands up wobbly, unable to support himself. He sits on the edge of the bed, lunging forward onto the floor. He bumps his chin, but doesn’t get a more serious injury. He blanks out.

The doctor begins the IV, after placing Justin back in the bed. “We’re going to sedate him. The other drugs aren’t working for his swelling. You may still talk to him, but he might not know what’s going on.”

Justin looks at Abbey distressingly, “Please bring me home. I’m so afraid of this place.”

David cries. “Mommy make Daddy happy!” He soaks his mother’s shirt.

Justin’s Mom, Lynn, walks into the room. She embraces David, wiping away his tears. “It’ll be ok, Sweetheart. The doctors will take good care of your Daddy.”

“Daddy’s scared, Grammy!”
“I know he is. It is a little scary, this place. Daddy needs your support, okay?”

“Okay, Granny! Mommy doesn’t love Daddy.”

“Mommy loves him. She’s just upset right now.”

“When will Daddy be awake?”

“Daddy is awake, but he’s very sleepy. Once the swelling goes down Daddy will talk more, and be able to play again.”

Back home, Abbey signs the papers that’ll change Justin and his son’s life forever. She’ll tell him when he’s well again. She can’t go to court until he gets out of the hospital. It’s all to be kept secret, until the right time. She can’t drop it on him, when he barely understands where he is. She’s not that heartless.

Chp. 5

Justin gazes into the doctor’s eyes, as he flashes the light into his eyes. He tries to keep his eyes open. He rests his head back on the pillow. It’s another grueling day at the hospital for Justin.

He has a visitor. The four year old grins, “Mr. *NSYNC, how are you?”

Justin looks over to the side of his bed, at the angelic little girl. “I’m sleepy Sweetheart. Where’s your Mommy?”

She enters the room out of breath. “Amy, we have to be quiet. Justin needs his rest. Tell him what you want to tell him.”

“Thank you Mr.*NSYNC, for helping Mommy and me.”

The mother peers into Justin’s soft eyes, almost falling into a trance. She’s just as happy as her daughter, to see him again.

Justin’s eyes widen as Abbey enters the room, with David.

Abbey stares at the woman and her daughter, wondering who they are. She walks out of the room leaving David with his father.

Amy tells David who she is.

David likes Amy right away. They pal around, almost immediately. “I’m glad my Daddy saved a pretty girl.”

Amy blushes, “Your Daddy’s number one.”

David giggles, “Yeah Daddy’s number one!”

Abbey attempts to drag her son away. He begs her to stay, to see Daddy. She’ll let him stay if he doesn’t interact will Amy.

Tears fall from his cheeks, “Mommy, I love Amy!”

The mother sighs, “I don’t understand.”

“No, I will not have my son be a part of this.”

“What is he being a part of?”

“My daughter wanted to visit him, and thank him. It’s nothing more than that!”

David is used to his mom thinking Justin will cheat on her, though he never has. “Mommy she’s not Daddy’s girlfriend! Daddy saved her, ‘member?”

“Sorry about that, Ma’am. I………. I’m going to go out for a bit.”

Everyone’s asked to leave because they’ll be taking Justin for a scan of his head. He’s asleep, as they wheel him into the room for the test. He can’t move, so they have put him totally to sleep.

Justin requests his son is there, when he comes to, and his mom, Lynn.

They bring joy to his face as his eyes open. He’s happy to find out his swelling is going down, and he can go home in a few days.

Chp. 6

Justin stands for a few minutes to get in the wheelchair. His legs are wobbly, as he moves slowly, with his mom supporting his back. He’s drained from the medicine, and tries keeping up his head, which pushes on the soft padding behind him. He’s going home, though he looks worse than when he came.

He sits uncomfortably in the car, resting his head on the headrest.

Lynn asks him, “How are you feeling?”

“I’m confused, Mom. When will my memory be better?”

“The doctors hope it’ll improve, soon, as the swelling lessens.”

Later that day, J.C. is with Justin at home. “You have to eat Justin. You’re so weak.”

Justin pushes away the cheeseburger. “I’m not up to eating. I found out something terrible today.”

J.C.’s eyes widen. “What’s wrong?”

Justin sighs heavily. “Abbey signed separation papers. I’m so afraid of losing David. I’m especially scared at this time, because of my health not being on track.”

J.C. gasps, “How’d you find out?”

“I went looking for some medicine, and found the letter. She doesn’t know that I found out.”

“The best thing you can do is get your strength back. That’s why you need to eat. Maybe, she’ll change her mind.”

“I wish she would. I don’t want to lose them!”

Justin takes a few bites of his burger, and sips his soda. He gradually gets up from the wheelchair, and makes little steps. J.C. stands behind him, when he feels woozy. Justin makes his way to his bed.

J.C. sets the wheelchair beside Justin’s bed, in case he needs it. “I’m just putting this here, if you feel weak. I know you want to walk on your own, but you need to let the drugs subside. The doctor says you need to also rest, because it’s going to be awhile before your concussion heals. You don’t want to suffer another blow.”

“J.C. I’d like to go to the studio tomorrow. I miss being with you guys.”

“I guess you could come in, if you take it easy. I just don’t want you stressing yourself. I don’t think you’re well enough to record vocals.”

“I’m sorry I’m the reason the new album’s being delayed.”

“You can’t help this.”

Justin sighs, “This will probably be our last one.”

“I understand. You have a million things going on. David deserves your time. He’s young, and needs a caring father like you. You can’t give that to him on the road.”

J.C. covers his friend with the blankets, making sure he’s warm, and comfortable. “I’ll see you tomorrow, Justin. Hope you’re feeling better.”

Justin nods his head, in a weak voice he says, “Bye J.C.”

Chp. 7

Sleepy eyed Justin awakes to the morning sunshine. He smiles at the beautiful sunrise, taking place. “It’s something so simple, but I never get to see this. It’s equally as beautiful, as all the architecture I’ve seen over the last six years, in the many countries I’ve visited. Back to reality, no time for sunsets, or smelling the flowers that are blooming outside. Not in the real world, they say. People are to busy bickering, complaining, and killing people, to just stop and enjoy life. I’m sick of that!”

Justin has a physical therapist come to his home, to work on regaining his strength. “What do I do, so I can walk without feeling tipsy?”

She smiles, “We’re going to just practice walking. I’ll be right here, if you’re unable to go further. We may try a walker, just for balance control, until you can stabilize yourself.”

Justin follows her instructions, and slowly walks, resting after only a few minutes. Justin stands for several seconds to build up his strength, and then sits back in the wheelchair.

Abbey watches Justin struggle, from a distance, with the exercises. It’s amazing how hard he works to get something done.

He’s not like anyone else she knows. Yes, he annoys her, but there’s something very special about him. He seems so patient, about everything, and understanding. He never seems to complain, just say sorry, for work keeping him away. He keeps all his feelings inside, far away from the public.

She finds him quite shy, even now that they’ve been married, for five years. He’s secretive, which drives her insane. She doesn’t understand why he holds back expressing his true feelings. She imagines David’s the reason. “He’d have moved on, if it weren’t for him. I was nothing more than a publicity stunt for his record label, and he doesn’t know it. This madness has to end. David was a mistake, but I love him. He’s the best that’s come out of this. They lied to him, and I did too, to promote his record. What he doesn’t know won’t hurt him. Justin’s better off thinking it’s a failed marriage. I don’t know why I didn’t leave him sooner? Yes I do those eyes of his. I fell for him, a little.”

“Mommy, who are you talking too?”

“No one, David, Mommy’s thinking things over.”

“Mommy, don’t be mad at Daddy!”

She painfully looks into his eyes, “I’m trying not too!”

Abbey’s afraid to tell her son the truth, knowing what the outcome will be. She’ll make Justin break the news.

David goes to see his father, who’s in bed resting. He snuggles next to him, and falls asleep.

Justin awakes gazing over at his son. He holds him in his arms, bringing back memories of David being an infant.

The youngster opens his eyes, clasping his arms around his father. “Daddy don’t leave!”

“I’m not leaving. How about you come to the studio tomorrow, with me?”

David shakes his head in agreement. “Okay, Daddy!”

Chp. 8

The studio is packed with lots of interesting things for David to play with. He enjoys playing around with his dad in the studio.

Justin sighs as he holds his son in the wheelchair. He supports David’s head. The boy appears pale. He doesn’t understand why he’s lethargic all of a sudden. “David what’s wrong?”

His eyes tear up, “My stomach hurts, Daddy.”

“Have you been feeling sick?”

“Playing makes me sick.”

“Does Mommy know?”

“Mommy says it’s nothing.”

Justin questions how long this has been going on. David hides things just like he does.
“Does anything make it better?”

“No playing rest of day!”

“Does anything else hurt?”

“No just my Tummy!”
David becomes less active over the next month. His father brings him to his doctor. Justin feels there’s something seriously wrong!

Justin sits on the table with David in his arms. “If you have to be pricked, Daddy doesn’t mind if you cry. I’m going to be right here.”

The doctor examines David, noticing he appears weak. The doctor orders a bunch of tests.

“Mr. Timberlake, your son has reflux.”

“What’s reflux?”

“What’s happening is his food is coming back up. Reflux inflames his chest, causing a burning feeling in his throat, and causes stomach pains. We can do allergy testing to see if its food related.”

David cries through the test, as they stick the needles underneath his skin, injecting the possible food allergens that may make him sick.

Justin wipes away David’s tears, and tells him something funny.

The testing doesn’t show anything, though it doesn’t mean that food isn’t making David ill. Allergies don’t always show on the testing.

Justin feels there is more to it than reflux. He doesn’t see how come his son is acting weak. It’s from more than lack of sleep, this illness.

He brings David home. The two don’t say a word. Justin turns on the radio to lighten the mood, and wash away his son’s unhappiness.”

“Daddy, I don’t want anymore tests.”

Justin peers into his son’s uncertain eyes. “Anything that scares you we’ll talk about, and if you don’t want to do it I’m not going to make you. All we want is to make you feel better.”

“Daddy, do you feel better?”

“I’m still recovering. I get weak from the drugs that reduce my swelling. Hopefully, I won’t be on them much longer.”

Abbey asks Justin, “How’d it go?”
Justin takes her aside. “The doctor say’s its reflux. He’s going to start him on a pill to ease the pain, but wants to do further testing, to find out the cause, so we can cure it.”
David doesn’t improve on the medication, and develops other problems. He complains of pains throughout his body, and his stomach constantly hurts. He’s missing a lot of school, because of all that’s going on.

Justin’s with him all the time, comforting him through it. Their bond has grown closer. All three have been working hard to stay together. Separating, at this time, would be devastating for Justin and David.

One night, as Justin rocks David, Abbey sits beside him gazing into his eyes. Justin rocks for a good long time, until he’s asleep, before putting David into his bed. He appears tired from being up with his son at all hours of the night, every single night. He doesn’t want to miss anything.

Abbey lies next to him, entangling her fingers in his curls, being careful not to touch his sore spot. She gets off the bed, as Justin sleeps, snooping through his stuff, as usual. Photo albums are everywhere she looks, along with loads of personal notes she has never seen before, notes possibly revealing how he truly feels about her, and his son, and life in general.

She sits down and begins reading, about how his life truly is, not how the media makes it out to be. Abbey sighs, “I really don’t know him. I’ve been with him all these years, but never got to see this side of him. It’s one of those hidden parts, the public misses out on. He’s really quite lonely, because he can’t let his guard down, even with me. He won’t come out and say it. He doesn’t trust me, or otherwise he’d have told me these things.” She continues reading. “It’s not trust, according to him. He doesn’t understand why I turn him away.”

Justin’s passage brings tears to her eyes, “Abbey is a beautiful wife, in my eyes, and heart. She can be demanding at times, but guys do need that, to some degree. I love her, and am sorry for not always being able to be there. Life is so short, and it’s hard to think, as I’m far away, that I may not have another chance to see her again. When she turns me away, when I’m given the time to be with her, it breaks my heart. I’m depressed at times knowing that somebody I love, I may lose. I guess I never was good enough for her.”

She closes the book with notes, and puts it back where it was. Justin has everything in a place, so she makes sure it’s in the exact same spot.

Chp. 9

Abbey studies Justin, as he sleeps in peace. He probably won’t awake, until morning, because of his medication running him down. That’s why it is easy to find out what’s up with him, when he goes to sleep. He’s usually a light sleeper, but the drug makes him a heavier sleeper.

He’s come along away since the accident, but still has short term memory lapses. He’s back on his feet, for the most part, but taking it easy, something he doesn’t like to do.
He has difficulty learning the song lyrics, because they’re in his short term memory. It’s frustrating to him.

Lance, J.C., Joey and Chris practice the lyrics with Justin, and give him tips of how to remember the songs. They’re very encouraging to him, as he struggles.

J.C. goes with Justin to the doctor. He flashes a friendly smile. “It’s just a check up, Justin. It’ll be over before you know it.”

Justin gives his friend an uneasy look, “If this was you, you’d be scared too!”

“I’m sorry Justin. I’m trying to make you feel better.”

“J.C. I wish I was with my son right now. I don’t really need a cheek up.”

“Justin, you’re sick, and need to be here.”

The doctor wants Justin to have another MRI. He’s going to give Justin a muscle relaxer, in case he has one of his episodes, and forgets why he’s in there. “I’ll see you in the morning Justin.”

J.C. goes with Justin, since Justin won’t be able to drive afterward, and because Justin wants his friend there.

J.C. steps back, as the doctor pricks his friend’s hand.

Justin laughs a little. “J.C., they’re after me, not you! It didn’t hurt all that much. I just don’t like the sleepy stuff.”

J.C. comes back, and sits down. “How sleepy will you be?”

Justin yawns, “Really tired.”

“It’ll be like having a little nap.”

Justin nods his head drowsily, ready to close his eyes.

One hour later: “Justin are you starting to awake?”

His eyes open briefly, as he glances at the familiar face. “J.C., I’m so sleepy. I want to go back to sleep.” Justin needs another hour, before coming to on his own.

J.C. takes him home to be with his son, though he figures he’ll sleep most of the day. Justin appears very sedated, even after two hours.

David’s right there for his dad, after he gets home from school, because his father’s there for him.

School’s getting to be too much for David, especially on gym days. He lacks the energy to play the full period. He avoids playing with the other kids outside, afraid of being sick. He builds sand creatures in the sand, to appear that he’s doing something. Lunch time is horrible, as he rubs his stomach in pain, ditching his meal, as soon, as no one’s looking. He’s so happy to be home, with his dad, away from that mess.

Chp. 10

Two weeks later, Justin’s back at the hospital. He sits in a big plush chair, clasping his hands together. He looks down at the gown, and ID bracelet. Justin sticks one arm out. Seconds later, he has a pinch in his hand. Gauze is wrapped around the hand, along with a clear adhesive to protect it from movement.

Justin throws his pants on, and one of his shirts, making sure not to bump his bandaged hand. He’s ready to go meet fans, before he has to come back. He wheels himself out of the room, with two body guards close by. He goes to the pediatric floor first, and is greeted with lots of smiles from the kids, and questions why he’s using a wheelchair and an IV.

A voice says, “Hello Justin. How are you doing?”

He looks over his shoulder, barely recognizing the face. “I’m doing ok,” he says shyly. “How’s Amy?”

“She’s doing great. Amy can’t stop thinking about you, and David. How’s he doing?”
“David’s been sick. Hopefully things will improve for us.”

“You two need to get better! I better be getting back to work. What floor are you on?”
“I’m on seven. I probably shouldn’t have said that. Now, I’ll have 500 fans in my room.” He laughs.

“You might be right, *Mr. *NSYNC.”
He waves goodbye, and moves himself into the elevator, pressing the button to go back down stairs. He’s getting nervous about what is going to happen next.

He turns on the TV, trying to ease his mind, until David and Abbey come to visit him.

David makes his way from the edge of the bed to his father’s arms. “What are you watching, Daddy?”

Justin smiles, “Rugrats. I’m going to shut it off, now that you’re here.”

“Are you sleepy, Daddy?”

“I’m a little tired.”

“My tummy hurts!”

“Mommy and I are trying to get you better.”

Daddy, will you be sleepy tonight?”

He nods his head, “Probably.”

David questions, “Do you come home?”

“The doctor wants me to stay the night. I’ll be home tomorrow.”

David wipes away the tears in his eyes. “Mommy’s not nice, Daddy. She makes me cry.”

“Buddy, Mommy doesn’t think the way I do. It doesn’t mean she wants to see you hurting. Some people aren’t very emotional. Mommy isn’t used to illness, like I am. She’s never had to deal with it.”

“I want to go with Daddy.”

Abbey rubs his back. “The doctors can’t have you in the room. You’ll see him, when they bring him back. We have to go to the waiting room, until he’s in this room, again.

Justin peers into his eyes helplessly. “I’m sorry, David.”

He holds back the tears, trying not to upset his son further. The tears surface, as he’s being wheeled down the long narrow hallway. “Is this a good idea this surgery? There’s no way of getting out of it, now.” He closes his eyes, trying not to focus on where he is, but where he’d like to be, as the tears keep coming down his face.

Chp. 11

David paces nervously, waiting to see his father. Several hours have passed, and he’s growing more impatient. He picks at his Happy Meal, barely touching it. The toy occupies him for a short time.

Abbey breaks off half of her son’s burger. “I’m going to eat it, if you’re not.”

Silence fills the waiting area as the surgeon enters the room, taking off his cloth mask. He cracks a slight smile, and grasps onto Abbey’s hands. “You can go see him, but he’s heavily sedated. I don’t suggest the boy be allowed in the room.”

David looks up at the man with a sad face. “Please let me see Daddy!”

The man can’t help but fall for the little boy, “Okay, but have to be very quiet!”

David hugs him, “Thank you, Sir!”

Justin lies sleeping, with a large bandage on his now shaved head. A tube is emplaced in his nose. Monitors seem to be all over his still body. The sight is frightening to David.

Justin gasps for air, as the nurse removes his breathing tube, but is soon breathing fine, on his own. His eyes open, scanning the room for his son. Their eyes meet, as warm smiles surface on their faces.

He sits with his head propped up on the pillow, looking over fan mail, and interacting with his son, David. “Daddy’s got a lot of fans!”

“I’m you’re biggest Daddy!”

Justin kisses him on the forehead. He laughs, “I think you may be right.”

“Daddy you’re too sleepy!”

“I can’t help it, Buddy. Don’t get mad if my eyes close.”

“I won’t! You need lots of sleeping!”

Abbey takes Justin’s Fan Mail, and places it on the table, while Justin sleeps. She begins reading it over.

David reminds his mom, “Mommy, that’s Daddy’s! We’re not supposed to look!”

She puts down the mail startled, by her son’s comments. “I wasn’t really reading it.”
David rolls his eyes. “No lying, Mommy. I saw you read it!”

Lynn walks in, hugging her grandson. “How’s Daddy?”

“He’s sleepy, Granny!”

“The doctors are making Daddy tired. He’ll feel better tomorrow. How are you?”

“My tummy won’t stop hurting!”

“Did you eat all your Happy Meal?”

“I’m not hungry. I wanted to see Daddy.”

David can’t sleep, as he complains that his stomach is in more pain. He wishes his father could hold him, and bring a smile back to his teary face.

That night, Grandma Lynn holds him in the rocking chair, gently rocking him, back and forth. She rubs his back, talking to him soothingly. She lays him on the bed, as he becomes limp, and has a pale skin tone. She covers him with the blanket, as his eyes close.

Chp. 12

Justin lies in bed, with David beside him. David’s still pale, as Justin rubs his belly. Justin sighs, whispering, “Why are you making him sick, Father?”

Usually, by the next day, David feels better, but this time he doesn’t. Justin’s heart sinks, as David complains of aches and pains. The children’s pain relievers don’t work. Nothing seems to ease his pain, but his father’s smile, and jokes.

There will be good days, and very bad days for David. He’s gradually getting worse, with more symptoms appearing. His father has been looking for a specialist to help his son, who is gradually losing a fighting battle with something doctors can’t explain.

David’s lost a great deal of weight from not being able to eat. He is getting a temporary feeding tube, which will hopefully give him some strength.

The doctor sprays medicine in David’s nose to numb it. He has Justin lie down first, then David in his father’s arms. He suctions out the spit, before starting to stick the tube in.

Justin holds him, as the tube goes in. He watches in pain, as the feeling of the tube makes his son gag, as tears flow down David’s face, from the discomfort of the tube. He wipes away David’s tears. He helps his son off of the table.
David’s hospital room is full of colorful balloons and well wishes, on cards from family, friends and fans.

His father reads all of them to him. Abbey sits there watching the two interact. Justin speaks softly, in funny character voices, to try to have a smile appear on his son’s thin ghostly face.

He folds the paper, and makes it into a ball shape. Justin’s been ignoring his album, because his son means more to him. But he misses being in the studio, and recording. He’s not ready to go back, and leave his son at the hospital, but Jive insists he be there, and get it done.

Abbey glares at him. “I’m surprised you stayed this long. Just go back to your record label. I know that’s what really matters to you anyway.”

Justin turns his head the other way. “You just don’t understand. I don’t know why you hate Jive, so much.”

“I have my reasons.”

He turns back around, raising his eyebrows, “And what would they be?”

Her face turns red, “I’m not going to say!”

“I’m not going back to JIVE until you explain yourself. We’re married, and shouldn’t be keeping secrets from one another.”

Abbey sits in silence, as he looks into her eyes for an answer.”

After several seconds, she speaks, “Jive hired me to date you, and keep the relationship going to gain you publicity. I was supposed to break it off, but I fell for you, to some degree. JIVE is still upset with me, because I had a baby. A baby you didn’t have time for in your busy life. I’ve hated these last five years, of you only being able to spend minimal time with David, and nearly no time with me.”

“Abbey, I was there for most of it. I’m crushed that you lied to me, about truly loving me. I’m disappointed in my management for pulling a stunt like this.” Justin wipes a tear from his eye, and exits the room!

Chp. 13

A wet mist covers him, after he makes his way out the door. The rain is picking up, as Justin sits down on the bench, outside the hospital. His head hangs low, as his hands cover his teary face. He trembles with every breath he takes. A soft Kleenex is unfolded, and lightly brushes against his cool, rosy, red, cheeks. It gently touches his nose, as he takes out another. Nothing he does will ease the pain.

He whispers, “What’s this? It’s no tissue.” He unfolds the paper trying to wash away the tears long enough to read it. “This is the reason I can’t leave. David means too much to me. I’m so lost right now. Father, please help me.”

He moves his head upward, as he hears footsteps coming near him. A slight smile breaks through the tears.

She places her hand on his shoulder, gently. “Are you going to be alright, Justin? I saw you walk out of the hospital, with tears in your eyes.”

He sticks his head on her shoulder, “I’m so unsure. Everything I once thought was great, all seems like a mirage. I wish I could turn back the hands of time, and make life right again. I guess that doesn’t change reality, though. I’d like to deny it all, but it’s wrong to hide from the truth, even when it’s this intense. I should’ve learned my lesson with Britney. She probably was a stunt too. Nobody truly seems to love me, for something more than a pop star, or another pretty face.”

“There’s one little face that’s up in that hospital that loves you, as you. I hope you at least go back for him. He also loses in this game. I’m extremely sorry about all that’s going on. If you want to chat about anything I’ll be happy to, on my break. I, unfortunately, have to head back upstairs to the pediatric department.” She gives him a hug, before taking off.

He sighs, “I don’t even know her name. I got to go back. I just can’t stand being away from my son. David’s a part of me, like my arm. Without him, I can not function.”

He listens carefully to the rain, and birds chirping a warm song, bringing a bit of cheer. “Maybe, there is a rainbow hidden in those storm clouds? It’s just waiting for the right time to emerge. I already know the treasure I’d like to be waiting for me. My pot of gold is happiness, and the well being of my son. That’s all I really need.”

He slowly walks back towards the hospital, glancing back at the bright blue sky. A vibrant rainbow shines above him, as the rain comes to a stop. Justin stands in awe at its beauty. It seems heavenly to him, as if God wants him to know that things will one day be good again.

“Thank you, Father, for giving me a sign. I realize you’re watching over us. I’ve been praying that you’ll get us through. Miracles can happen, and in my heart, I hope that one will come soon, for David. When you gave me this precious baby boy, I felt so honored. I’ll be crushed if I can no longer have him in my life. David’s my heart, soul, and mind. I trust in you, what you choose to do, even if it’s losing him. It’s something no parent should endure, but we’re all God’s children, and go by your rules alone.”

He walks into the hospital, ready to take what he has coming to him, to get the treasures he most desires.

Chp. 14

J.C. embraces Justin in his arms, after Justin walks into the room. He rubs Justin’s back soothingly. “I’m here for you Justin. All four of us are. We’ll find another record company, if we have too. We’ve been getting the warnings as well, but we realize it isn’t the time to pressure you.”

Justin wipes his tears with his hands, trembling. “I’m so sorry, J.C., I don’t deserve friends like you.”

“Justin, it’s not your fault. Let’s go some place private, and talk. It’s best to get out all that’s on your mind.”

He nods his head following his friend. The warm sun hits his wet face, as he sits down near the sparkling lake.

J.C.’s hand slowly reaches his best friend’s shoulder. “Let it all out here. There’s nobody, but us.

Justin finds it easy to tell J.C. all that’s happened. J.C. always seems to understand him. He feels J.C. is like his older brother, and he can tell him everything, because they’ve shared a lot of difficult experiences.

J.C. helps Justin to his feet, walking him to his car.

“Where are we going J.C.?”

“I’m bringing you home. You’re going to get sick, if you don’t rest. You need emotional relief.”

“I’ll be fine.”

J.C. tightens his grip. “We’re going home. I’m worried about you.”

Justin shakes his head, “Okay.” He steps into J.C.’s car, and buckles his seatbelt.

Lance, Joey and Chris are at Justin’s home. They’re all staying the night, to prevent Justin from going back to the hospital.

Justin takes his medication, and gets into the warm blankets. He falls asleep, as the other four chat in the other room quietly.

Lance sighs, “We can’t stay with JIVE. They betrayed Justin.”

J.C. rubs his head with his fingers in a circular motion. “They have the master tapes. We’ll have to start all over again.”
Chris laughs, “No, I have the master tapes. I asked JIVE for them.”

Joey looks at Chris oddly. “Why’d you ask JIVE for them?”

Chris replies, “This way if we don’t like the way it sounds, we can change it. We need to talk to Justin, about his feelings. We shouldn’t make any decisions, until Justin’s present. We could search around though, for a company that doesn’t do stunts like this.”

They all nod their head in agreement. Silence fills the room, but breaks, after a slight noise.

J.C. stands up, and heads towards Justin’s room. He opens the door, to see Justin getting dressed. “Oh no, he’s sleep walking.” He manages to keep Justin in his room, at least.

Justin makes a mess of the room, knocking objects off of the nightstand, taking clothes, books, his music books out of drawers, and throwing his covers on the ground.

J.C. goes to the kitchen, and grabs a bottle of pills. He returns to the bedroom, and sticks one of the pills underneath Justin’s tongue. It dissolves, in his mouth, and begins calming Justin down.

Justin falls back into J.C.’s arms. The medicine makes part of his brain sleep, so he won’t have anymore night rages.

Chp. 15

Nights are troublesome for Justin. He usually doesn’t even know what’s happening. It’s part of the healing process, his doctors say. They use the medication to send his brain the correct message. Luckily for Justin, it only happens at night. He has to be closely monitored after the drug starts working, because of the affects it has on his brain.

Justin’s drowsy in the morning, from the drug. He can’t sit up without his friend’s support.

J.C. holds onto Justin’s hands, so Justin can get back on his feet. “Lance gets behind him. We’re going to get him dressed.”

“J.C., I really don’t want to dress him.”

“Lance, he can’t do it by himself.”

Lance takes the shirt from J.C.’s hands, and gently places it over Justin’s head. “There you go, Justin.”

J.C. carefully helps him into his pants, and socks.

Justin’s acting more like himself, an hour later. He eats his cereal, and puts on his sneakers. His coordination is off, but improving. “Are these tied right, J.C.?”

“That’s right. Are you ready to go visit David?”

“I’m ready. I’m going to get through this.”

Justin runs to J.C.’s car, and stumbles. He makes it to J.C.’s car, and gets inside.

David’s sleeping, when they arrive. He’s been sedated since Justin left. Rosy red cheeks appear on the five year old’s face.

Justin bends down to thank God for making David a little better. He’s gained weight, but he knows David still needs a cure.

A doctor enters David’s hospital room. “Mr. Timberlake, we may finally know what’s wrong with your son, and have a treatment for his illness.”

Justin’s eyes fill with tears, as his hands begin to tremble, “Cure?”

Chp. 16

Two days have gone by, and they’re in a whole new hospital, and state. The trip is tiring for Justin and his son. Justin barely knows the city, though he’s been to Philadelphia before, for concert tours. He’s terrified of being all alone in a big city, with no friends, or family. His safety is at stake, so he’s careful to stay away from large crowds of people, even at the hospital, he watches his back.

Abbey’s back at home. She wouldn’t come saying it’s too painful to see her son that ill. All it means to Justin is that their relationship is over with, but he blocks that from his mind, because David desperately needs him.

He remembers crying, because she didn’t want him to bring David to the new hospital. It makes Justin’s heartache, knowing she didn’t care to have him around anymore. No longer being with David would be devastating for Justin, and would ruin his own recovery.

Philadelphia’s Children’s Hospital deals with many rare disorders. David’s new doctor has seen other people with similar symptoms like David’s.

David needs to have an operation. The doctor wants to scope the area where the reflux is, for ulcers, and other inflammation to make sure this is what they’re dealing with.

Justin holds him in his arms, rocking him gently, as he sways from side to side. David’s head slowly goes on his father’s shoulder, as the medicine begins to put him to sleep. Justin gently places his son in the bed, kissing him on the forehead.

David cries, “Daddy please come!”

Justin looks at him helplessly. “I can’t go, Buddy.” He begins wiping his son’s tears away, praying he’ll fall asleep before they take him. Justin desires to embrace his son in his arms again, but can’t.

David’s eyes close, and Justin breathes a sigh of relief.

David’s eyes open, “Daddy.”

Justin smiles, “Hi David. How are you?”

“I need a nap. My tummy’s yucky!”

“You can sleep, as much as you want. You’re going to start to get better. No more feeding tube, hopefully.”

David grins, “Yay!”

David sits up on the bed, after a week of being on the new treatment. He’s able to do minimal activity, but lacks a normal five year old’s energy level. He has no interest in moving off the bed.

Justin observes how to do the tube feedings. It seems complicated at first, but now he could basically do the procedure on his own, if he had too. He’s preparing himself for when David can be released.

Justin would like to take his son out of the hospital to experience things outside of that hospital surrounding.

Chp. 17

Justin looks out across the river. The city lights shimmer off the water below him. Tear drops plop into the river, as he watches the boats going in and out of the harbor.

He imagines being back in Millington, Tennessee where nature is everywhere, and everyone seems to be a family. This city is a place of loneliness, uncertainty, and dark shadows that loom over him. He trusts no one. He can’t. David’s life is in his hands. He’s willing to fight it all to have his son back.

David sits atop his father’s shoulders, as they make their way towards the entertainment center.

Dave and Buster’s is a family fun center full of video arcades, loads of games, and eating, with many prizes. They ride up to the play area on the escalator, heading towards the area where you purchase the playing cards.

The place is off limits to everyone but Justin and his son, to ensure that both of them will be safe. Dave and Buster’s is a great escape from the rest of the city, for the two of them. It is two hours for them to have some fun.

Justin carries David to the different locations. The two love playing the basketball game together. He gets a few giggles out of David, as he misses the baskets, intently.

Justin’s face turns white, as he tries to get in a good breath. He sticks David on the ground, as he tries to breathe. Several seconds pass, and his breathing slowly returns to normal. His face remains pale. He reaches into his pocket, and discovers his pills. He forgot to take them. That’s why he’s sick.

“Daddy you okay?”

Justin nods his head. “I’ll be alright.”

“Daddy you’re sick! It’s my fault.”

Justin takes him in his arms. “It’s in no way your fault, Buddy. I forgot to take my pills.”
“Daddy, that’s bad!”

“I know.”

They move onto the skeet ball. Justin demonstrates how to roll the ball up into the numbered circles. The two score 300 points together.

Justin sits with his son in the photo booth, and selects a back ground for them. They both smile, as the flash goes off. A colorful bunch of trees are behind them, in the photo. It seems like a painting, more than a picture.

The memories of the day linger in Justin’s mind. He’s not about to let them slip away, like so many dreams do. “No the good parts will remain,” he tells himself, as he begins drifting off to sleep.

A voice calls, “Justin!”

His eyes flutter, as he stares into his mother’s eyes. “Why are you here?”

“I couldn’t let my only son be in this big city all alone. You two need me.”

“I was doing okay, but I missed you.”

Justin glances around the room, confused. “Where’s David?”

Lynn takes a deep breath in and out, “Upstairs, Sweetheart.”

He closes his eyes, too tired to keep them open, “Okay, Mom.”

“I’ll be right back. I’m to go visit with David.” She kisses her son on the head.

Lynn waits a second to go upstairs, until the staff is ready to bring Justin up to the floor David’s on.

The damage is noticeable as she enters the room. A chair is tipped upside down, and a crack is in the wall.

Chp. 18

Justin rubs his head, and looks at his mother, unable to communicate by talking. Tears flow down is face. He didn’t mean to have another night rage. His expression is worrisome. A deep fear lies inside of him, that all he’s been working for may be lost, because of this incident.

This is Abbey’s weapon against Justin, after hearing of the incident.

Two weeks later, Justin sits in the Millington courtroom. He moves his legs, and clasps his sweaty hands together. His baby blue eyes have no sparkle. He pulls at his tie, several times, and begins singing to himself.

Abbey smirks glancing over at her ex-husband. Undoubtly, she thinks she’ll win, and Justin will lose all rights to see David.
Her lawyer isn’t so sure, and warns her not to act like a wise guy. He advises her to bend the truth, if she desires to win the suit.

The judge stands up, “Mr. Timberlake, will you please step forward.”

Justin approaches the stand, as his body shakes, and heart beats like a loud drum.

“Do you swear to tell the whole truth, Mr. Timberlake, and nothing but the truth?”

Justin sighs, “I do.”

Abbey’s lawyer asks him, “Mr. Timberlake, you do have night rages, is that correct?”

He stutters, “I have them once in awhile. They’re t reatable, by medication.”

“Did it ever occur to you that you may hurt your son in one of these rages?”

“David’s my first priority, and I would never do anything that jeopardizes his well being. What occurred was unintended. It was a mistake. The doctors didn’t know how to stop it.”

“Mr. Timberlake, I can’t understand you. Don’t bunch your words together.”

Justin tries hard to form words, but is too nervous. The room’s silent, as he slowly speaks, tripping on his words.

The judge looks around the room sternly. “This case will resume in an hour.”

Abbey moans, “I want this to be over with! We have this in the bag.”

Justin takes a few sips of water, readjusting his tie. Tears emerge from his eyes. He swipes them away, breathing heavily.

It’s Abbey’s turn at the stand. She goes through with the pledge, with a fake serious expression on her face.

Justin watches miserably, as his ex puts on the show of her life.

These tears he’s seen before. They always bothered him because they are a front. She did have real moments of sadness, but there was a true difference.

Her eyes are deceiving, and cut like blades into his broken heart. He’s bleeding far too much from her weapons of destruction. His candle flame for her is no longer burning, but an uncontrollable fiery rage is picking up inside of him.

The judge rises. “I’ll be back in a few minutes, to give you all the answer to your question.”

Chp. 19

He steps outside for a few seconds, trying to get into control. He makes a startling discovery, as he pulls out his pill container. “How could I not have noticed? No wonder I’ve been having those night fits. She changed the amount I’m receiving. I’m supposed to have whole tablets, but these are broken into halves. 500 milligrams is the dosage of a whole capsule, not half of one like she told me.”

Justin brings his hands together, and begins to pray. He rubs his stomach in a circular motion, as he becomes more nauseated. He removes a Kleenex from his suit jacket, wiping it across his sweaty forehead.

It’s too late to present this new information to the judge. He sighs, closing his eyes tiredly.

The judge takes his seat, looking over at Justin. “Mr. Timberlake are you alright?”

He clears his throat, “A little sick, Judge.”

The judge keeps his composure, though he appears compassionate towards Justin. “Mr. Timberlake, I have good news. You will have visitation rights.”

Visitation to Justin is a call on the phone. Their time will be minimal. He walks out of the court room, with tears flowing from his eyes.

David stands by his grandmother, not understanding why his father is crying. He hugs his father weakly. “Daddy, I love you.”

Justin hugs him tightly. “I love you, too! I’ll never stop loving you.”

“Don’t cry, Daddy!”

“I’m trying not too, Buddy. You and I aren’t going to see each other, as much. It’s hard for me to deal with that.”

“Why do you have to go?”

“Mommy doesn’t want me around you. She thinks I’m harmful to you!”

“Daddy don’t leave!”

“Buddy, I’m going to be around, and get you back. I’m not going to let Mommy keep you from me.” Justin kisses his son on the head, stepping back so Abbey can take him home. “Be a good boy for Mommy.”

Justin can’t stand peering into David’s teary eyes. His heart could not be more broken.

Lynn takes Justin into her arms, trying to ease the rages inside.

“Mom, she won unfairly! She’s been giving me the wrong dosage of medicine. I’ve been so caught up in David. I never even thought to look at the bottle. I’m plenty capable of taking care of my son.”

Chp. 20

This may have been the worse mistake Abbey has made. She knows nothing about her son’s condition. She doesn’t have a clue how to do his feedings, though she watched it being done a few time. She wished she had paid closer attention, instead of being annoyed with her husband.

The air is thick, and atmosphere gloomy. Chills run down Abbey’s spine, as her son gasps for air.

Justin rushes into the room, out of breath, horrified at the ghostly child. “What happened, Abbey?”

“He ate something.”

“He’s not supposed to have any food by mouth. You know that. What’d he eat?”

“I………… wasn’t paying attention.”

Justin shook her, “He could die, Abbey!”

“Calm down, Justin, and breathe! They have everything under control.”

“Our son is on a breathing tube, that’s hardly under control.”

She doesn’t want to admit he’s right, and it’s her fault. “We’re going to get through this.”

His voice breaks, “We can’t even get through a conversation without yelling. How’s this going to work?”

“We’ll have to make it work!”

Abbey holds him tightly, sobbing on his shoulder. He rubs her back, comfortingly. She gently places her hand underneath his chin lifting it. “It’ll all work out.” She releases her grip.

One cot is all they have, and they must share. Justin stays at the edge, nearly ready to land on the floor, while Abbey hogs the bed.

She laughs hitting him with the pillow. “Stop that.”

“Stop what, Abbey?”

“You move too much!” She smothers him with the pillow.

Justin pushes her pillow away, sticking it over her mouth. “No, I don’t!”

She rolls on top of him. “You can’t move, now!”

“No, I guess I can’t.” Justin closes his eyes. He moves his body to the side, and off the bed they go.

He opens his eyes stunned, “Ouch, you okay?”

She mumbles sleepily, “Yeah.”

He helps her back on the cot, and goes to rest in the plush pink chair, by David’s bed. Questions run through his mind, as he plays with his barely visible curls. He adjusts David’s blanket.

“David, it’s me, Daddy.”

David opens his eyes, for the first time.

Justin breathes a sigh of relief. “It’s alright, Buddy. I’m right here.” He kisses David’s forehead.

He settles back in the chair, leaning his head against the side of the chair. His eyes shut, and his breathing slows.

Abbey awakes, looking for Justin. She notices him sleeping in the chair, shaking. She places a blanket over him, to see if the tremors will stop. They don’t subside. She presses her fingers into Justin’s arm, “Justin wake up!”

Justin twists his body to the side. “What Abbey?”

“I was just wondering how you are. I saw you shivering, and gave you a blanket. Are you okay?”
His body trembles. He speaks repeating phrases. He’s overtired. These past 8 months have been traumatic for his body. It puts stress on the healing, and causes set backs.

Three weeks have gone by. Summer is fading fast. Life is at a stand still for the two. There’s been nights of the two crying, as they await the moment David comes off of the breathing device.

Justin’s not concerned about himself. He’s worried about his son. Once David’s off the breathing tube, Justin will be happy.

He sits at the edge of the cot, holding a sandwich. He breaks off half of it. “Here Abbey, take it. I’m not very hungry.”

“Thank you, Justin. Is there anything I can get you?”

He turns his head away. “No, I’m fine. I’m going to go out for a sec, to get some fresh air. Come and get me, if David awakes.”

“Hold up, Justin.” She positions the hat on his head. “It’s a bit chilly. You might need your light jacket.

“Thanks, Abbey. I’ll be right back.”

She kisses him tenderly on the cheek.

He walks out of the room confused. “What was that for?”

Chp. 21

Justin returns refreshed from the crisp fall air, with a teddy bear in his hands. His cheeks are dark pink, and slightly chilly, as Abbey runs her fingers across his baby smooth face and the hair on his chin.

He sets the bear next to his son. The bear adds normalcy to the depressing room. Her arms rest around his neck, as she leans forward to kiss him.

“Abbey, it isn’t the time for this! Look David’s eyes are open.”

David mouths “Daddy,” as Justin gets closer to his bed. He reaches for the large white plush teddy bear, hugging the cuddly stuffed animal.

It’s like having David reborn, seeing those eyes open. Justin can’t wait to be able to set foot in his son’s room, again. He didn’t have the heart while David’s in the hospital. The feeling is over powering and painful. Nothing’s out of place, like time has frozen. Everything’s different, now.

David’s breathing tube is disconnected. His parents pray he’ll be able to stay off it. He’s not well enough to get out of bed, and he still has many monitors on him.

Justin’s happy he can hold his son. It’s the best thing in the world, to be able to hug your child.

Justin picks up David, allowing him to rest his head on his shoulder. He rubs David’s back, as he carries him out to the car.

Justin sits on one side of David’s bed, while Abbey is on the other. Justin pulls the covers over him. They kiss him on the forehead. They exit the room, after turning on the walkie talkie. Justin hooks the other one to his pants, so they can listen if he has trouble breathing.

Justin plops down on the couch tiredly. His eyes begin to close, as he becomes drowsier.

She covers him with a blanket. “Are you going to be okay?”

“I’ll be fine. I just haven’t had much sleep lately. I’m going to head home soon.”

“You’re barely awake. Stay here, until you’re rested.”

Justin follows Abbey to their old room, where he can sleep.

Chp. 22

David presses on Justin’s arms for support, to dress in his Halloween costume. “Daddy, I did it.”

Justin chuckles, “Yep, you did! Are you sure you want to be me for Halloween?”

David nods his head excitedly, “Yep, being Daddy’s the best.”

Justin reaches out his hand, taking grasp of his son’s tiny hands, lifting the youngster into his arms. “What do we say tonight?”

David giggles, “Trick or treat, please?”

The light wind blows the colorful leaves all over the green grass. The sun shines through the fluffy clouds, the perfect day to go trick or treating.

A new shiny red wagon, with black handle awaits David. A cotton soft blanket lies inside to sit on. David rides to his grandma, Lynn’s, house in this, because of his weak muscles.

The doctors have little hope he’ll ever be able to walk with out support. The Timberlake Family believes it’ll happen. David greets his grandmother, stepping out of the wagon.

“One, two, three steps he made.” Justin sighs, wishing David could make a few more steps. “Maybe by Thanksgiving he’ll have better motor skills.” Justin stabilizes him in his lap, as his mother takes a photo.

Lynn gives David a toy, because he can’t have food. “This is a harmonica, David. It’s a musical instrument. Would you like to try it?”

David takes the blue harmonica, putting it up to his lips, and blowing. It sounds like a whistle, at first, “Thank you, Granny!”

She smiles, “Happy Halloween, David.”

David crawls into her open arms, snuggling against her chest, rubbing his eyes.

Lynn places her arm around him, removing his head from her chest. She positions his frail body carefully on her lap. She runs her fingers through his locks. “Don’t give up, Justin! He’s such a special grandson.”

“Mom, I know we can pull trough this. He’s come a long way. His brain and muscles need to relearn what they once knew.”

Thanksgiving Day arrives. David’s wearing a white button down shirt, with a pair of dress pants. He stands near the wall, and slowly makes his way to his father at the other end.

Justin bends down to David’s level, “Way to go, Buddy, high five!”

Justin cries for Abbey to come. “Abbey, he walked to me.” His eyes fill with tears, as he embraces her.

“That’s great. I knew he would.”

Justin stares at Abbey oddly, in the bathroom, the next morning. “It couldn’t have happened, again, could it? One time wouldn’t do it.”
Abbey glances at him tiredly, “What are you looking at, Justin”

“Oh, it’s nothing. Abbey, what would you think about having another baby?”

She smiles warmly, “maybe someday.”

Chp. 23

Justin grasps Abbey’s hand, as they start the ultra sound, putting on the warm jelly. He knows she’s pregnant. He watches the screen, as the baby comes into view.

He recognizes the woman who’s doing the ultra sound. “It’s nice seeing you again. It sure has been crazy, this past year.”

She nods her head, “It sure has. Hopefully this pregnancy goes smoothly.” She wipes off the jelly, helping Abbey off of the examining table.

“You take good care of her, Justin, and David.”

A second visit is here, as Abbey’s pregnancy progresses. This time David comes, along, full of questions about his new baby sister.

Abbey rests her head on the pillow, on top of the examination table. She tries to get comfortable, as they perform the test. She’s happy Justin is here for her; after all she’s done to him. She likes hearing the baby on the fetal monitor.

David finds fascination in the jelly substance his mom has on her belly. He loves rolling his hands over her stomach, to feel the baby.

Abbey and Justin go to a baby furniture store, after the ultra sound.

Abbey hands Justin a pink baby blanket. What do you think of this one?”

He rubs it against his face, “really soft! I think it’ll be great.”

Abbey can’t help but laugh. “I never said try it, Justin. Though, you look cute with a pink baby blanky!”

Justin pushes David’s stroller down the isle. “What do you think of the blanky, Buddy?”

“It’s pretty for baby.”

Back home Justin runs through the list, “Safety locks, crib, baby carriage, pacifiers, diapers, changing table, clothing, baby powder, high chair, bibs, bottles, baby wipes, am I missing something?”

“Yes Justin, the baby!”

He smirks, “I have to wait for that delivery.” Justin winks, kissing her softly. “I’m going to work on the baby’s room. You should be resting.”

“I’ll be fine. I’m not stressing too much!

She goes off to check on David, who still has developmental delays, from lack of oxygen.

David’s playing with his harmonica, and has learned a new song. He stops, “Hi, Mommy!”

“HI, David. You’re getting pretty good. You’ll have to show the baby. She’ll like that.”

“Mommy, are you and Daddy fighting anymore?”

“I made a lot of bad mistakes, but things are better, now!”

Justin lay still watching her sleep, taking in the beauty he once loved, and is falling for all over again. “This time things are going to be different. I’m going to be around for this baby.”

Abbey wakes, over hearing him, “It’s not your fault, Justin.” She sighs drowsily. “I’m sorry for the pain I caused you. It’s going to take a long time for you to forgive me, if you ever truly can.”

Justin can’t believe how much she’s changed, with the coming of the new baby. His eyes close.

Justin opens his eyes, and gets dressed to go to his doctor to have an MRI Scan. He’s not a big fan of having the test done, but because of his injury it’s best he does, every six months. His least favorite part is going to sleep for it.

J.C. goes with him, even though he’s afraid of the needles. He’ll drive his friend home afterward. He’s surprised how fast they get him in and out. Now, he’s waiting for Justin to be less groggy, so he can go home.

Justin wakes in his bed, not remembering going for the test.

J.C. reminds Justin of what happened this morning. “The doctor says you won’t have to have anymore of those, because your brain hasn’t changed.”

Justin has the new baby on his mind, and his son David.

Chp. 24

Abbey grins tiredly, on the table, as the final ultra sound begins. She looks over at Justin nervously.

He kisses her gently. “I’ll be right here, through everything.” He touches her head carefully, pushing back her long hair.

Justin watches as they prep her to go to the delivery room. “Now, you can get some sleep.”

Abbey nods drowsily. She leans against Justin, as the medicine begins to take affect. She listens to Justin’s singing voice, as she rests.

Justin sings soulfully, “Like I Love You.” The captivating song eases everyone’s tension, as the heavenly singer helps her fall asleep.

Abbey opens her eyes. She rubs her stomach, as the pain increases. “It hurts so badly!” She squeezes his hand tightly, “Earth to Justin!”

Justin comes out of his daze, “Right here I am!” His head is spinning, as he gets up dizzily.”

She asks concerned, “Are you going to be okay?”

“I need my medicine. I feel sick. I don’t know how much longer I can hold out.”
“Where are your pills?”

“I took my pill. It hasn’t improved.”

She sobs, “It’s my own fault. I never should’ve told you that dosage. I wish you wouldn’t have these confusion episodes.”

He stares blankly at Abbey, motionless.

“Justin, please speak!”

Chp. 25

He shakes his head, after several seconds. “That was a funny sleep,”

“Justin, you weren’t sleeping!”

Justin sighs resting his head against the chair. He places his hand on his forehead. “I might pass out, Abbey.”

The nurse takes Justin’s blood pressure, and listens to his heart. “It’s probably just stress. We can admit him, or wait and see what happens.”

Abbey screams in pain. “These contractions hurt!”

The doctor gives her an epidural, to ease the pain. “Do you feel better?”

Abbey nods her head. “How long will the surgery be?”

“It’ll be over before you know it. After we take the baby out, you’ll see her for a few minutes. We’ll take her, as we place the mask on your face. The room’s almost ready for you. Your husband can come too, but must get into the scrubs.”

Justin suits up though he’s under the weather. He presses against the metal table, unable to stand. His knees are water, ready to fall everywhere. He’s able to stay up, through the process, but needs to sit after the baby’s out. He holds the newborn in his arms. He bobbles his head, closing his eyes, “Lily.”

The staff takes the infant from Justin’s arms, and move Justin quickly out of the room.

Tears flow from her eyes, as she starts to become drowsy. She calls out Justin’s name, as she takes the final breath.

Justin’s mom sits with her sick son. “I’m right here, Justin. Abbey will be out, soon.” She’s used to these episodes, and knows it can take him awhile to respond, because his brain isn’t receiving the correct message. It’s hard that when this happens he becomes dependant on those around him.

She thinks this is one of his worst episodes. “Justin, Abbey’s out, and opened her eyes. Would you like to go see her?” Lynn gets no response. “Justin, shake your head, if you want too.” He shakes his head. Lynn pulls him up from the chair. She holds his hand unsure of what he may do. She helps him sit in the chair.

Justin’s unresponsive in his wife’s hospital room. It takes forever to see him improve. The first thing that comes back to him is saying, “Lily.” After that he has no memory of events. His eyes remain cloudy.

They decide to admit him for the night, just to rule out anything. He’ll be in the same room, as Abbey. David will stay with Justin’s Mom, Lynn.

Abbey smiles, “It wasn’t so bad. I’ll keep an eye on Justin.”

Lynn rubs her hands. “I’m sure he’ll be fine.”

Abbey yawns, as her eyes close.

Chp. 26

Abbey moves closer to Justin, gazing into his cloudy blue eyes. She takes him in her arms, putting her hands under his limp body. She rests his body back on the hospital bed, before the doctor takes him, to the MRI Scan.

She sits back down in the wheelchair, as they raise the bed rails. She clasps onto his muscular hand. “David will be here, when you wake.”

Justin’s doctor assures Abbey he’ll be fine. “He’s been sedated many times before. This time we’re going to do some very special scans, to try to rule out things. I was hoping he wouldn’t need another scan. It should take about an hour and a half to perform the test. We’ll bring him back here, to come out of the sleep.”

David arrives with his grandmother, Lynn. “Where’s Daddy?”

“Daddy’s sleeping, so the doctor can check his brain. How’d you like to see your new little sister?”

“I love her, Mommy! Nine months seemed forever! Nine months is like my whole life!”

Lynn and Abbey smile at David’s comments.

David stumbles over to his father, who was just wheeled into the room. He sticks his fingers through the bed rails. “Daddy you need to see Lily!”

Lynn pulls him away, from the hospital bed, cuddling him. “Daddy’s sleeping from the medicine. He can hear you, but is too sleepy, to answer.”

David sniffles, “Why’s Daddy always sick? Lily needs Daddy!”

Lynn picks him up in her arms. “Maybe Daddy will open his eyes, if you sit on his bed. We have to be really careful, though, with the wires on him. Don’t touch any, okay?”

“I won’t Granny! I remember from last time.”

He crawls up toward his father’s head, not disturbing the wires. “Daddy don’t be sleepy, no more!”

Justin looks at his son. “I’ll play with you.”

“Daddy, you’re too sleepy, to play.”

Justin’s eyes close. “I’m not going to have that test.”

Lynn explains to him, “You already had that test. You’ll have a better memory, later. Abbey’s going to place Lily on your bed.

Abbey places Lily next to Justin, in her soft pink blanket. “Your daughter, Lily, is next to you, Justin. She’s in the blanket you picked out.”

Justin runs the hospital blanket through his fingers. “My blanket’s soft too! The doctor gave it to me, before I went to sleep.”

Abbey laughs at Justin’s grogginess. “What do you think of Lily?”

Justin looks at the baby, unsure if that’s Lily. “I like it.”

Abbey sighs, “Justin, this is your daughter, not an ice cream flavor.”

He doesn’t understand why she’s angry. “I like lilies.”

She sighs, “Lily is your daughter, Justin! She is not a flower.”

Justin’s doctor is giving him a new medication to help with his seizure activity. He’s going to stay in the hospital, until the seizure medication starts working.

He’s having fewer seizures, by morning, and is able to hold Lily, and acknowledge who she is. He’s no longer stopping during his sentences, staring blankly at nothing.

David helps care for his new little sister, at home, along with his parents. His disability doesn’t stop him from giving them support. He finds ways of getting around doing things.

Justin motions for David to come to him, after David’s in his pajamas, “Would you like me to read you and Lily a story? It’s her bed time.”

David nods his head. He gets David on his lap, as Abbey places the Timberlake’s new jewel into Justin’s arm, in the rocker. Justin holds the book in his other hand.

The angelic little girl squeals with delight, as Justin reads softly to them. Her tiny hands move around, but slow, as she falls asleep.

David coos right back at her, giggling at his little sister. “Lily likes that story! He yawns, rubbing his eyes.

Justin kisses him on the forehead. “Goodnight, Buddy.”
Abbey takes him in her arms, bringing him to his bedroom. She gets him comfy in the warm blankets, watching him fall asleep. She walks out of the room quietly, returning to Justin.

The two embrace each other, adoring their sleeping baby in the crib.

Justin runs his hands down Abbey’s long brown hair.

She plays with his short curls, kissing his head.

Finally, things seem perfect, but are they? The thought lingered through both their minds, if finally things would go right!

Chp. 27

Jive is furious that Justin has found out the truth, and left them in the dust, along with his four friends. If it is up to Jive, the group may never record another record together. They’ve burned two bridges that’d keep them out there.

He wipes the sweat from his forehead, as he begins the dance number again. “It’s back to this, and old abandoned warehouse in Orlando, FL.”

It’s nothing like it used to be, for the five men who make up *NSYNC. It’s a memory of how it all started, and how it may be all coming to an end.

Tender six year old mimics his father’s dance routines on the bed, inspiring Justin to work at his dance steps. David seems to know them better than his Dad, despite his learning set backs.

Justin wraps him up in his arms, “You could teach me how to dance. You’re quite good, David.”

David grins, “Basketball’s my thing, Daddy! I don’t want to be a recorder.”

Justin laughs, “Maybe someday you’ll like it. I won’t ever say you have to though.”

J.C. presses some knobs on the recording devices. He tinkers with the controls, getting the sound right. “No need to sound like the Chipmunks! Four tracks are already done, and have been edited. Let’s work on three or so today. Justin you can record first, since you have the lead vocals.”

Lance watches David and Joey’s daughter Brianna, as Justin enters the recording box.
Justin places the head phones on his ears, and looks for J.C.’s cues to know when to begin his vocals, and change them.

“Music is a journey into my soul.
Take a seat, and listen to my beat.
There’s so much more to me,
Than the word celebrity.

Don’t listen to the press.
It’s all tucked into my songs.

All you want to know is there.
These melodies are a part of me.
My heart and soul are in them.
They are one of my rarest gems.

Don’t listen to the press.
It’s all tucked into my songs.”

“That was great J,” J.C. exclaims from the chair. “What’s wrong, Justin?”

Justin sighs, “I think a seizure is coming on. I better go lay down.”

J.C. nods his head, “Okay, you tell us if you need anything.”

Everyone’s used to Justin’s seizures, and how to treat him. His friend’s remain calm, and talk to him. They monitor Justin’s breathing, and heart rate, until he shows movement, again.

Justin’s in a daze as he comes out of it. “I’m sorry, J.C.”

J.C. keeps his friend on the bed. “I think the heat’s getting to you, Justin. You should take a break.”

David cuddles up next to his father, “Daddy, you need a nap!”

Chp. 28

David hands Brianna his blush teddy bear, smiling, to soothe her tears. “Your Daddy will be right back. He’s recording!” He hugs her. “I’m sad too! My Daddy’s sick!”

David grabs her hand, leading her to a colorful kids table, in the corner of the room. Some of David and Brianna’s toys are on the table, for them to play with. The two engage in a magical world, far away from reality.

He looks through the toilet paper roll, eying the area, “Pirates over yonder!”

She nods her head. “Daddy has pirates! What we do?”

He paces the floor, putting down his roll, and picking up the piece of paper on the table! “We must get the treasure! X is on Daddy! Pirates are trouble!”

Brianna follows David until he stops half way, “Oh no! Sharks are in the water!”

“No like water! I go back!” She begins toddling back.

“Don’t worry”, he whispers into her ear. “Our ship will keep out the sharks!”

The guys pick up on what the two young children are doing, and laugh, a little, playing along with them.

Justin smiles at his son. “Am I what you’re looking for?”

David sits on top of him, “yep, X marks the spot Daddy.”

Justin laughs, “Where is this X?”

David points to the X on his printed shirt. “There Daddy!”

Justin embraces him in his arms. “I love you, so much, Buddy!”

“I love you too, Daddy!”

Justin sighs, “Time for your feeding, David.”

David shrugs his shoulders, not liking the tube feedings. The tube feels funny, when liquids go through it. It’s hard because he has to stay still during it, which isn’t easy for a six year old.
Justin realizes it’s difficult for David seeing everyone else eat real food, while he gets a formula based food. He tries not to eat around David, and when food is around attempts to get David’s mind on something else.

While Justin tends to David, and his new found friend, the other four are able to record their vocals.

It takes *NSYNC a month to record the whole album, on their own, with their tour band backing them on songs. Now, the guys are in search of a new record label, but can they find one? The question haunts them.

Chp. 29

J.C. pops the pill underneath Justin’s tongue, sighing. “This heat is bringing on his seizures. Maybe we could all go back to our homes, and rest a bit. We’re still waiting to be signed.”

Lance, Chris and Joey agree.

Justin moves his body to the side, but J.C. positions him on his back, to make sure his airway stays open.

They head home, to wait on finding another record company, and allowing Justin to feel better. J.C.’s going back to Tennessee with Justin, and his son, to be there for Justin’s needs.

Justin’s doctor prescribes pills that’ll make him sleep on his trip home, to prevent him from having a seizure on the plane. He’s been on this medication before.

He leans on J.C.’s shoulder, closing his eyes. He lifts his head from J.C.’s shoulder drowsily.

J.C. smiles, “It’s okay, to fall asleep, J. It’ll all be over when your eyes open, again. I’ll make sure David’s fine.”

David takes his bear out of his backpack, handing it to his father. “Daddy, don’t be scared. Bear will keep you safe.”

Justin smiles at very the loved bear, “Thank you, Buddy!” He motions for David to sit in his lap. He picks the curly haired boy up, cuddling him in his arms.

David rests his head on Justin’s chest, hugging him, as he sleeps. “J.C., when will Daddy not be sleeping?”

J.C. takes the youngster in his arms, “When we arrive back home.”
“That’s too long!”

“I know, but it’ll be over before we know it!”

Chp. 30

It’s a time of sadness and joy. The group has finally got a record deal, and is ready to release their follow up to “Celebrity.” Unsyncable” is the album that is thought to relanch the band’s career.

A week prior to the release Justin goes to the hospital, after having a seizure that leaves him with breathing difficulty.

J.C. places the oxygen mask gently on his friend’s face. He moves his hand along Justin’s cold pale face. He picks up David, rubbing the youngster’s back, moving back away from the boy’s father. He doesn’t want David to see his father like this.

David struggles with the situation, trying to move closer to his father, who lay still. The boy doesn’t want to go home to be with his little sister. Justin is all that maters to him. His mom takes him away at night, as he becomes sleepy, and lets him come back after school hours.

Sick or not Justin plans on helping release the bands next record, even if it was from his hospital bed. He doesn’t care, as long as the fans get to hear it.

J.C. doesn’t think Justin is up to doing interviews, nor will he be able to keep his eyes open, long enough.

Justin doesn’t want to be on any drugs the day the album is released. This day is too important to him to not remember it. His entire family and band mates are with him to celebrate the day. Two hours with them all together is all the doctor will let him have with them, due to his weekend state.

Abbey plays with his curls, as he gazes up at her. “What’s the matter, Justin?”

He weakly tells her, “I’m so scared. I don’t want to be here anymore. Save me from this place.”

“You’re so sick, Justin! With you home anything could happen………”

He brings his pointer finger to her lips, “If something happens, I want to be with my son, daughter and you. It’s not good to be in this environment, that’s not where I want everything to end, if it does. I miss holding you, every night, and you holding me, and embracing my two children. Please bring me home.”

She sits on his hospital bed, wrapping her arms around him, supporting his shaky body, “If that’s what you want I’ll take you home.”

She kisses him gently, trying to get out of his grip, but she understands why he won’t let go. “Justin, I won’t leave you.”
She stays in that position several seconds, trying to ease him into sleep, as his grasp becomes lighter. Her hands move up to his mass of curls, as she lowers his head and body to the pillow.

Abbey signs papers for Justin to receive home care, instead of being in a hospital. She’s troubled about the other piece of paper, because of the sequences it will have if Justin and her sign it. It’s a matter of Justin of having another chance at life, if he stops breathing, or ending it there.

Justin assures Abbey he’s not about to give up on life. He plans on pulling through this, but the question remains can he?

Chp. 31

Abbey places Lily beside Justin. “How are you doing?”

He smiles sleepily, “I’m better now that I’m home. I’ve missed my little girl so much, and our family’s time together.”

She lies beside him with Lily in the middle of them. “Amy and her mom are coming over, later. The child misses you and David, so I told her mom to bring her over to see you.”

Justin’s surprised that Abbey no longer is against the woman. He lifts his head from the pillow to kiss her, as he hears, “Da, da!”

He gazes at his daughter, melting at the sight of her blueberry eyes, and soft cheeks with a beautiful smile. Justin kisses her tender cheeks, and laughs at the tight curls upon her sandy blond hair. “This is why I need to be here. I can’t stand to be robbed of this.”

Justin sticks a bonnet on her head, after dressing her in a warm country dress, with daisies all over it, a pair of white stockings, and a pair of dress shoes.

He’s not well enough to get dressed up. His doctor recommends bed rest. Justin tries his hardest to do what the doctor asks. He trembles as he gets off of the bed, just able to stand up.

Abbey taps his fingers, “No physical activity, Justin. That means no bed making. You’re sick, and need to recover from that seizure. You can barely hold yourself up. The nurse will be coming in a bit, to start you on the newest seizure medicine.”

Justin stands there, dizzily, as Abbey wraps her arms around him. He tilts back, stumbling, but Abbey has him, so he won’t fall.

She gets him back in a resting position on the bed, as the nurse enters the room, to start his medication. The nurse lifts up Justin’s shirt to get to his port to give him the drug. The nurse wipes his tubing with an alcohol wipe, and puts in sailing to washout what’s in his tubing.

Justin sighs, “It stings.”

“It won’t hurt too much longer, I promise.” The nurse uses another syringe to give the drug, “All done, Justin.”

Justin yawns, “By nurse.”

She places an oxygen mask on his face, “Bye Justin.”

The nurse exits with Abbey, taking her aside. “This treatment is very successful, with most patients. It blocks abnormal waves in the brain. Since the accident Justin’s brain has a different set up, even after the surgery. His messages get messed up, because of the abnormal shape, and constant rise, and fall of swelling. Lots of activity over works his brain, causing it to swell, at rest he’s usually fine.”

“Why does he react so horribly at night?”

“His brain goes on overdrive from the day. The set back to the drug is extreme tiredness, but only needs to be given once a day.”

“Will he need a breathing tube, again?”

“We’ll have to wait and see. As long as he’s resting he should be fine. I’ll be back later to check on his progress.”

David walks into his father’s room, moving up on the bed with him. He screams, “Mommy!”

Chp. 32

One day later, David looks at his father, with tears flowing down his precious face. Abbey can’t pull the youngster away, and Justin doesn’t desire to have it any other way. David waits for his father to open his eyes.

Abbey sighs, not able to tell David the hard truth that his dad may not live. She wipes away his tears, sniffling. “You saved Daddy’s life, David.”

The boy’s eyes light up, “I just wanted to help, Daddy. Daddy shouldn’t sleep all the time! I miss Daddy feeding me.” He moves off the bed into her arms, something he seldom does. To him Justin is everything, and Abbey usually is upsetting.
Abbey rocks him back and forth in her arms. “It’ll be alright.”

He leans against her shoulder, “Mommy I love you.”

She stops dead in her tracks, adoring the words out of his mouth. He hasn’t said them since he was a baby.

“Shhh…….. “We’re going to go toy store, for a bit, just you and me, Lily will stay with Grandma, and Daddy.”

“Can I buy a toy for me and Daddy?”

She nods her head, “Yep, what ever you want.”

One hour passes, and Grandma comes to baby sit, Lily and watch over Justin. She sits next to his bed, as she cradles the little girl, in her arms.

Abbey has a cell phone on in case anything happens. It rings, and she fears the worse. “Hello?”

“This is Lynn. Justin just opened his eyes, as Lily crawled up on him. His eyes are still open. I think he’s going to pull out of this.”

The nurse gives Justin his treatment. “This is progress for him, opening his eyes, and touching his tubing, though he has a long road ahead of him.”

“We all just want him better.”

David runs into his father’s room. He smiles, holding his new remote controlled toy. He shows his dad the fancy red convertible. “Daddy, this is our toy.”

Lily reaches out her arms, babbling at her older brother, trying to grasp the new object.

David pulls it away. “Sorry Lily, this is for big people!”

Justin motions for him to place the car on his bed.

David sits on the bed with the toy, opening and closing the doors, and playing with the lights. He peers into his father’s eyes. “Do you like, Daddy?”

Justin nods his head drowsily, “It’s okay to share with Lily, David.”

David shakes his head, though he didn’t understand all his dad tells him. “I’ll share Daddy.”

Two months have gone by. Justin makes his way across the basketball court, with the basketball in one hand, and J.C. holding the other. “I can do this, J.C. I don’t have any more seizures!”

J.C. pats Justin’s back, “I know you can, with a little help.”

“I’m here for the kids today. I’m especially here for m son. He’s the one that saved my life. Challenge For The Children is the best thing we ever came up with.”

“You deserve that, since you’ve saved so many of these young adults from killing them selves. In their eyes you’re a hero.”

“J.C., today I think everyone here is a hero. They don’t have to be here, but they are giving back to kids who certainly need a helping hand.”

Justin embraces David in his arms, as Abbey places a kiss on his cheek, as Lily squirms in her arms. “This is what being a hero is all about, nothing can’t beat that. I wouldn’t have a son if it wasn’t for this charity, because they pay for funding of that hospital, so he could have the proper care, or without you guys getting to a point finically that it didn’t matter the cost he could get the best care available. Thank ya’all, I mean it from the bottom of my heart.”

“God sent me this angel, from above.
She showed me love,
Her eyes have a heavenly glow
Those wings I wish she’d show.

She lingers in my brain.
Without her I’d go insane.
Always eases my sorrow,
Makes me hope for a better tomorrow.”
